The Alexian Brothers first reached out as a community to the sick, dying and abandoned during the Bubonic Plague. The first account of the Brotherhood is a document dated 1259 A.D, referring to the Beghards and Beguines - Christian lay people who gathered to live a more intense Christian life, characterized by fervent prayer life and ministry to neighbors. Working side by side during the plague, these men discovered common spiritualism and humanitarianism. A stronger and more organized ministry to the sick, dying and oppressed developed and became the bond that united them. The community adopted the Rule of St. Augustine and took as patron the much-admired St. Alexius – a saint devoted to the poor, sick and dying. The people began to call these men the Brothers at the Chapel of St. Alexius, then the Brothers of St. Alexius, and finally the Alexian Brothers. In time, the community received Papal approval and officially became a Religious Community of laymen, the Congregation of Cellites or Alexian Brothers, as they are known today. The Alexian community has expanded into an increasingly varied health fields exercising ministries across the country and abroad. Their communities are found in Belgium, England, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Philippines and the United States.

The Alexian charism is the prophetic and daring response of a faith community to the Gospel of Jesus. It is rooted in prayer and simple lifestyle. In discipleship with Jesus our response is a reaching out to the poor, sick, the marginalized and powerless. Our Charism calls us to conversion and total self-giving in continuing the healing and reconciling mission of Jesus in collaboration with others.

Inspired by the Alexian Brothers’ rich history and Christian values, we Alexian Brothers strive to be the premier innovator and provider of health and care services that address the needs of the communities we serve.

MISSIONISSION trengthened by community; prayer, commitment to the poor and the legacy of our founders, and in partnership with others, we Alexian Brothers witness the Healing Christ by a holistic approach to promoting health, caring for the sick, dying, aged and of all socio-economic levels especially the poor
